I finally finished the battlefield and Russian troops for Plevna and Dave finished the last few Romanian troops, as well as a few additional Turks needed for 3rd Plevna. So we were ready to run both scenarios back to back on Saturday at Millennium in Austin. Then, family interferred in Dave's gaming time, so I was on my own to implement. It all went smoothly.

Friday Night

While my wife, Beka, played in a 25mm Circus Maximus game, I carted in and set up the battlefield:

Plevna Battlefield set up and ready for the arrival of the armies.

Second Battle of Plevna

Saturday morning at 08:30, we kicked off with a description of the scenario, rules and armies. I deployed the armies and then the Turkish and Russian players were allowed a few minutes each to plan and adjust the deployments. We ended up with six players, which turned out fine, as the rules are so easy to learn that having more hands to move troops was an advantage.

End of Turn 1.

Dave (center) and Randy are two of the three Turkish players.

End of Turn 2.

From left Frank (Turk) watched while Mike and Martin (Russians) maneuver to ready the assault.

Sam moves the Russian left forward to begin the assault on the Ibrahim Tabiya positions.

First assault on the Grivitsa fort was repulsed in a bloody fashion, as usual!

Turn 3.

Position around Grivitsa, after a devastating fire by the Russians obliterated the Turkish artillery in the fort.

Turn 5 as the Russians agains assault the Grivitsa fort.

The Russians take the Grivitsa fort!

Turn 6. The Turks have not been able to retake the fort. Russians having no success in the middle, however.

No, the Russian cavalry cannot fit through that gap! Sorry.

Turn 7. Turks are growing desparate to regain the Grivitsa fort.

Turn 8.

Final positions around the Grivitsa fort with the Russians still in possession.

Result

Draw with the Russians holding the Grivitsa fort until the end of the day.

The only change to the scenario was that I released the Russian reserves early, on Turn 5. The Russians were growing disheartened, so this was to really keep the game going.

3rd Battle of Plevna

For this one we only had three players, one Turk and two Russians.

I was hungry and tired, so did not get so many pictures.

Bob commanded the Turks and here we are at the start of the battle.

Romanians after Turn 1.

Turn 3.

Skobiliev's Rifle Brigade storms the Milas, Talahat, Yunuz Redoubts and holds them against several Turkish counter-attacks.

The Romanians prepare for the second assault on the Grivitsa fort.

Turn 4. The Romanian assault in progress. It carried the fort.

Result

The Russians siezed the Grivitsa fort and the fort on the far left. The Turks could not retake them. We played the night repositioning, but did not have time for day two. So a Russian victory was declared!

Summary

Everyone seemed to have a good time. There were many compliments on the terrain and the minis. I hope we managed to win some converts to the rules, too.
